Shyann and Joshua

Goddard Park, East Greenwich, Rhode Island
September 26th, 2022

Part of the joy of getting to shoot engagement photos with a bride and groom that you've likely only met and spoken with once or twice is that an extended photo shoot allows you to really get to know them over the course of a couple of hours.

The purpose of a session this is, in many ways, to break the ice ahead of their wedding day and I don't think I've seen a couple break the ice with me faster than Shyann and Joshua did the afternoon of their September engagement session at Goddard Park in East Greenwich.

Less than 60 seconds into Shyann and Joshua's engagement session, Shyann was sticking her tongue out and licking Joshua's face and I knew, right then, that this was a couple I was going to have a ton of fun with.

Both at this session and even more so in 2023.

It's hard to overstate how much I enjoy weird and awkward couples and Shyann and Joshua really fit the bill right away in our time together on this gorgeous fall afternoon.

There were no poses they were against, no matter how silly and, honestly, that almost made me want to stray from traditional, romantic photos and lean HARD into the ridiculousness but I figured ... why not do both?

Shyann and Joshua's session, therefore, turned into a solid mix of nice photos I knew they could show their parents and hang on a wall ... and silly photos that I knew would make them laugh.

This was especially true when we took to the iconic Goddard Park bridge and tried, unsuccessfully, to have Joshua dip his future wife. Made for a fun photo though, right?

Shyann and Joshua were so much fun to work with that, honestly, I could have spent an entire day walking around Goddard Park just documenting their interactions. Especially when they would occasionally play with their young daughter and throw her in the air or try to make her laugh.

That type of sense of humor tickles me right in my heart and I can only hope we see it on their wedding day proper.

Speaking of humor, there was no way I could end our session together without letting the bride and groom show off the amazing t-shirts and hoodies they made sure to bring for their engagement photos.

And I would have absolutely been remiss if we didn't try the dip photo one more time ... this time by reversing the roles for these two soon-to-be newlyweds.
Yes, it went about as expected.

All in all, I had so much fun with Shyann and Joshua that I didn't want our time together to end. Thankfully, it doesn't have to as we'll be right back it a year from now in what promises to be one of the most ridiculous, and fun, weddings I have in 2023.

And, if you doubt it, look below at the final two photos we took during this beautiful fall engagement session. If this doesn't scream my exact type of couple, I don't know what does.

So thank you Shyann and Joshua for a much-needed dose of levity in this crazy, crazy busy season and I look forward to doing it all over again next fall.

Well, maybe not everything. Even with 12 months notice, I don't think you'll get much better at dipping one another. But I'd love to be proven wrong. See you next year!
